Saving Money - What To Do With...

Hello Friend,

Think back to the great depression. Many of the success stories came from creatively using up what most people would discard to save money. Here is a list to give you some ideas.

What To Do With...

  • Bread Bags - use as freezer bags for short-term storage, especially when re-packaging family packs of sale meats. Knot the end to close it. Cut it open when ready to use. Don't reuse plastic bags that have stored meat. Do not use the bag inside out. Or use them to pick up pet waste, tie a knot in the end and dispose of them.
  • Leftover Rice - make a rice crust for a quiche by combining 1.5 cups of cooked rice, an ounce of shredded cheese and an egg. Pat out in a pie plate. Do not grease the dish. Bake at 425 degrees for 20 minutes.

  • Toilet Paper or Paper Towel Tubes - use to gather up unsightly loose electricity cords and stuff inside, for arts and crafts projects, use the empty paper towel tubes to roll your unpaper towels on and place on your paper towel holder.
  • A Half-Eaten Apple - cut off remaining good parts and save to make an individual apple crisp. To make crumb mixture, combine 1 tsp. each of brown sugar, flour, oatmeal and butter. Add a dash of cinnamon. Put this mixture on top of apples and bake at 350 degrees until apples can be poked through with fork.
  • Dried-out Bread and Un-eaten Bread Ends - Save slices in a freezer container or bread bag until you need to make bread crumbs. Grind up in your blender or food processor while frozen, toss in melted butter and season it. This is also a great topping for salads.
  • Empty Jelly or Honey Glass Jar - Use it to store your reusable cotton face rounds, like the photo below.

I go through the younger kids' clothing at the same time. When I have all the papers, I go through and write how many of each item are Needed. My older kids wash their clothing once a week, so I like them to have at least...

A Dress Up Box or Tote - Fill with yard sale finds or items donated by Great Aunt Hazel. Play Dough - I like to place what I...
